When P’s Mama said she wanted to do a clouds and stars cake smash theme, I was kind of stumped. I didn’t have enough time to order a star covered backdrop as production and shipping can sometimes take weeks, so I knew I’d have to create something myself. I searched through my backdrop collection and found a piece of blue backdrop paper I’d never used before that was just barely big enough. I found pre-cut stars at a party store and used fibre fill for the clouds. Voila! A beautiful night sky with clouds and stars perfect for P’s first birthday cake smash.
When P arrived for his cake smash, he was happy and ready to explore. As always, I started with some clean first birthday photos before introducing the cake to the set. If you could only have seen the behind the scenes of what it took to get P’s attention. We had 4 adults (Me and P’s Mom, Dad and Grandma) all making silly sounds, calling his name and playing peek-a-boo while big sister A held up toys to attract his attention. The things we do for baby smiles!
And then…….
CAKE!
As it turned out, P isn’t such a huge fan of cake. He wasn’t sure what to do with it at first and once he got a taste, he only picked at it cautiously. Not a whole lot ended up in his mouth. In fact, I think P’s Mama ended up with more cake on her than P did. After playing with the cake for a few minutes, he decided he was done and then climbed over it to make his escape.
It’s rare for me to end a cake smash session with a baby this clean but regardless of how each little one reacts to their cake, it’s always adorable to capture those moments and the milestone of the first year!
Want to do a cake smash but your baby isn’t a fan of cake? Bring something else with you….pancakes? spaghetti? cookies? watermelon? and I’ll take $30 off the cake smash price for the absentee cake ($245 instead of $275). There are so many smashable foods…Let’s get creative!
