Newborn

There is just something about newborn babies.  They are innocence personified; New and fresh with a lifetime ahead of them.  They could do or be anything.  Their personalities are yet to be uncovered and discoveries about the world around them yet to be made.  They are at the beginning.

It’s been almost 2 years since my journey as a professional photographer began and I have to say that I figured myself as a child and family photographer only.  I didn’t plan to patiently pose and soothe newborns for 3 hours at a time or fill an entire room in my house with hundreds of dollars in newborn props.  If you had told me 2 years ago that I would be doing everything in my power to keep my photography subjects asleep, I wouldn’t have believed you.  I love capturing laughter and silliness and fun…that’s who I am!

But I had promised myself when I began that I would try all types of photography before ruling anything out.  In the Fall of 2013 I shot 4 newborn sessions – all boys.  In 2014 I photographed 8 newborns and a birth session and learned A LOT about this genre of photography.  The truth is that with every tiny new life that I hold in my hands while adoring parents watch, help and chat with me about the new love of their lives, I fall in love a little bit more with capturing this fleeting first stage.

I’m a mom and I adore my daughters who are growing up way too fast (5 and 7 now!!)  There are days when they are driving me crazy and my favourite photo of a 2 year old K holding a 10 day old L catches my eye.  They were, are and always will be my babies and those precious images of their first days touch my heart and bring back incredible, vivid memories of our beginnings together.  That is why I chose to embrace photographing every stage; newborn innocence, babyhood exploration and discovery, childhood playfulness and family love.  Our journeys are made up of all the moments and stages and I am honoured when you choose me to capture them for you!

With a newborn photography workshop under my belt and several sessions scheduled in the next few months, you will be seeing many more images of adorable newbies from me.  For now, enjoy the photos from baby M’s shoot last week.  She was an absolute doll and slept her session away, making my work a whole lot easier.  Look out for the teenage years M & J – your girl is stunning!
