Maternity. It’s the type of session I’ve struggled the most with in my first year as a professional photog. Give me a family, some adorable kids, a baby throwing cake and I’m in creative heaven. Give me a beautiful belly of a mama to be and my confidence as a photographer suddenly drops by half. I think every photographer out there has a genre that doesn’t come naturally to them (at least at first). My first several maternity sessions were the standard, traditional poses that you would expect. Nothing special or especially creative and it totally frustrated me. So what does anyone do when they feel like they want to be better at something? Practice! Study! Work harder to achieve the goal! The result? Maternity just might be a new favourite of mine.
